As a Durbanite who learned the art of jewellery design and making in a Mexican mountain-village, Green's work has an unusual story to tell.
From engraved Perspex cuffs to customised rings her label has been featured and wanted as the epitome of contemporary South African style. She has also recently introduced a line that introduces stitching made by local craftswomen from the township Mandela Park.
"A stitch in time saves nine": "Stitches" is an initiative to empower unemployed black women in Townships in and around Cape Town. Being introduced to groups of women in community centers around town I saw the passion and creativity that equals my own and I also saw my chance to make a difference. The women are now in charge of my range of designs that incorporate stitching, embroidery and beadwork. The pieces become a work of art and a stepping stone for a better future."
The Words Cuff with text by South African Designer Philippa Green comes from the social awareness stitching project involving training of township ladies to perform local craftsmanship detail work on Philippa's exquisite designs.
The cuff reads, "I want to go to the place where the girls have nothing on but the radio"
