The label, S v o b o d a [ova] was a natural process of evolution for me. The style of the clothing is what I gravitate towards. I worked for an established South African Fashion House, Rosenwerth, where I learnt all the tricks of the trade, but always knew I would like to have my own brand where I could manifest/pursue my unique design style. The look is clean, pure, understated, ethereal, timeless, elusive, crisp. Fluid, light, transparent, transcendent, organic, sculptural, absence is important. Stillness. The fabrics I use reflect these sentiments, light weight, transparent, playful, complex, textured, tulle, elusive, structured at times, organic and rich, mohair, dupion silk is the only fabric with a slight sheen otherwise I prefer a matte palette, I use natural fabrics, as far as possible. And white, only sometimes black.
S v o b o d a [ova] is a Environmentally Conscious lifestyle brand worn by environmentally responsible people. Ethically produced on South African soil.
Inspired/Motivated by Japanese Design, the technicality, the ingenuity, the minimalism.
A strong Icelandic influence, the sentiment, the transcendence, the whiteness. The peace. The quiet. The landscape. The unspoken language. So really a Japanese/Icelandic input in equal measure is what gets me excited. Not to mention Pablo Neruda, the Chilean writer/poet.
The Egyptian Pleated Dress by South African designer Svoboda[ova] is another great example of unique design from this designer, with both Icelandic and Japanese influences. The high-V neckline and short length creates a sexy yet still reserved impression, while the small sleeves and rouched detail down the front give this dress its flavour.
